Alexander Joel is a German-British conductor, raised in Vienna and London, and has been a regular guest at most of the major opera houses and concert halls for the last decades.

Alexander Joel – International Profile between Opera House and Concert Hall

Alexander Joel

Alexander Joel is a German-British conductor, raised in Vienna and London, and has been a regular guest at major houses in Europe and internationally for many years.

Alexander Joel's Highlights for his season 2025/2026 include a new Production of "Peter Grimes" at the Korean National Opera in Seoul, a return to the Hamburg Staatsoper for a revival series of "Madama Butterfly", and a new Production of "Magic Flute" at the Israel National Opera in Tel Aviv. In Berlin, he will conduct a revival of "Auftstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny" at the Komische Oper, and "Cosi fan Tutte" at the English National Opera. In Vienna, he will conduct the Revival of "Der Rosenkavalier" at the Vienna Volksoper, as well as a new Production of "Eine Nacht in Venedig" to celebrate Johann Strauß Anniversary year. Future Engagements in the following Seasons include his return to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden with a Series of "Tosca" performances, as well as his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper with series of performances of "Tosca" and "Carmen".

Artistic Career

After studying in Vienna and London, Alexander Joel began his career as an assistant to renowned conductors at leading opera houses. His early engagements took him to the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and La Scala in Milan.

Joel has made a name for himself particularly in the German and Italian repertoire. His interpretations of Wagner, Strauss, Verdi and Puccini are valued internationally and highly praised by critics.

International Collaboration

Joel regularly collaborates with leading orchestras and ensembles. His musical versatility is shown in the breadth of his engagements – from major romantic opera to contemporary music theatre, from symphonic concerts to chamber music.

His long-standing partners include the Vienna State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Vienna Volksoper and internationally renowned orchestras in Europe, Asia and America.

Repertoire and Artistic Direction

His extensive repertoire includes the great works of opera literature: from Mozart through Verdi and Wagner to Strauss and Puccini. Special attention is given to his performances of 'Parsifal', 'La Bohème', 'Il Trittico', 'Der Rosenkavalier' and 'Madama Butterfly'.

Alexander Joel

In the concert hall, Joel regularly conducts the great symphonic works of the 19th and 20th centuries. His programs range from Beethoven and Brahms through Mahler and Bruckner to contemporary composers.

Current Projects

The coming season takes Alexander Joel among others to Seoul for 'Peter Grimes' at the Korean National Opera, to Hamburg for 'Madama Butterfly' at the Hamburg State Opera and to Vienna for a debut series at the Vienna State Opera.

Further highlights are productions in Tel Aviv, Berlin and London as well as concert appearances with renowned orchestras in various European musical centers.
